Cobh Wanderers Football Club

U.C.C. 0-3 Cobh Wanderers

Up to the 52nd minute of this game UCC were probably the better team although neither side had covered themselves in glory. Then the turning point of the game happened when Brian Fitzgerald was red-carded for a reckless tackle and we feared the worst for the remaining 40 minutes. Instead of sitting back and playing for a draw,

Wanderers seemed to up their game significantly and although Dave Curran had to clear the ball off the line on 64 minutes it wasn’t long before we took the lead. Three minutes later Mikey O’ Shea drove down the left and across the defender on the end-line. His persistence led to an effort which cannoned off the defender and into the top corner, for the lead. Wanderers continued to push-on and forced a corner on the right after 72minutes. Jason Abbott swung the corner brilliantly to the far post where Brendán Frahill headed to the net. Frahill was magnificent in defence after the sending off alongside John Meade who had to move across from left-full to the centre.

Three minutes into injury time Wanderers put a gloss on the score line when Chubbs picked up the ball in the middle of the field before feeding the running O’ Shea. Mikey ran on to tuck the ball neatly past the keeper to cap a fine second half display.

This was a great win and a great three points for the squad at the start of a big week for the club. The draw for the next round of the Intermediate cup is coming up on Tuesday before we play Castleview in the Keane Cup final in Turners Cross on Friday at 7:30
