FAI Intermediate Cup 1/4 Final: Crumlin United 2-3 Cóbh Wanderers.

vcrumlin

No guts, no glory. never more apt a saying to describe today’s performance from Cóbh Wanderers senior team. From the management to the squad to the supporters it was a day to be proud to be a Wanderer. This win was against all the odds and more. An unbelievable hat-trick from the Springfield Park man of every match has put us through to the semi-final of the Intermediate Cup for only the second time and maybe a date with a destiny we could have barley dreamed of three short years ago when we returned to the senior league with a strong squad because of one man, Eric McCarthy (we, as a club, should never forget or take for granted the importance of his huge contribution to this current project).

A match report couldn’t tell the story really…Chubbs scored the first after 10 minutes…a superb volley off a Jimmy Griffin knock down….we stopped playing and Crumlin went into a 2-1 lead at halftime. Kyle got sent off after 52 minutes and we all felt the game was up. But a long free from Dave Stack saw Chubbs connect with a looping header to level the tie. Against all the odds we took the lead.

Jimmy Griffin was released on the right wing and he picked out Chubbs who controlled the ball before easing an effort inside the far post for the winner. We went down to nine men when Dub was sent off for a high foot…shocking decision….but it only galvanised the team further….and some heroic defending from everyone left on the pitch saw us through. Full credit to Michael Deasy and all his management team for instilling a belief in this squad that nothing is impossible…and time may tell that nothing is????
