Chubbs on the double means trouble for Rockmount

If Michael Deasy felt any sympathy at full time, for the club he served so well in the past, he kept it well hidden. This victory was a while in coming and a fitting tribute to the wee man who wears his heart on his sleeve. The team selection was made difficult by the absence of John and Conor Meade through suspension and the loss through injury of the teams most consistent performer this season, Kyle Downing, but the players on the pitch more than made up for this by putting in a magnificent performance from start to finish to grab a first league win this season following three draws. The return of Mikey O’ Shea to drive the team forward from the midfield and an excellent performance by Jordan Tarrant-Lowry, in at left full for Downing, were big factors in this crucial win.

Wanderers were on the front foot from the off and took the lead as early as the third minute. A cross from the right by the teams most improved player of late, Alan O’ Flynn, was met by the head of Chubbs who guided it back across the keeper to the corner of the net. Rockmount posed little threat in the first half and the only surprise was that the home side failed to add to their lead despite some excellent openings created and some last ditch defending by the visitors
.
Wanderers started the second half in the same vain as the first and five minutes in were very unlucky not to double the lead. Alan O’ Flynn lifted the ball and hit a cracking volley from outside the box that had the keeper beaten all ends up but the ball smacked off the left upright and away to safety. Rockmount produced their first spell of sustained pressure in the final half hour of the game but Gary Collins and Brian Fitzgerald were colossal at the back to keep the lead intact. Eddie Nolan had to be rock solid in the right full position as much of the pressure in this phase of the game was exerted down the Rockmount left wing. On the other wing Dave Stack excelled having to do a lot of work tracking back in a test of his defensive strengths. The visitors best chance of the game came in the 21st minute of the half when they breached the Wanderers defence only for Michael Devine to produce a superb save from a point blank effort. The best was saved ‘till last as Chubbs produced another of his sublime finishes with a volley from the far touch line over the keeper and into the top corner of the net…. a world class strike….and someone who only saw the ball hit the net had the cheek to ask “who hit that?” Thanks to everyone who turned up to support the team….it was a good day to be a Wanderer
