Cobh Wanderers Football Club

JUNIORS: Cobh Wanderers 2-1 Douglas Hall

This game was in the balance right to the end and the fact that Wanderers came out on top could prove extremely important as the season progresses. In a tight game the home side just about created more of the clear cut chances and were lucky that the missed ones didn’t end in dropped points. The first real chance of the game fell to Douglas after 12 minutes from a bizarre mix-up in the home defence. A simple pass back from the centre circle saw about five players frozen to the spot allowing the visitors’ striker pick the ball up and hit a powerful shot just over. Wanderer’s best chance of the half fell to Griffin after 30 minutes. A mix-up in the Hall defence allowed Griffin through on goal with just the keeper to beat. Jimmy managed to curl his effort over the top when it looked easier to score. Three minutes later Ian Murphy got through some good work at the corner flag and crossed to Hogan whose header was just tipped over by the Keeper. Hogan volleyed over on the stroke of half time following a corner on the left swung in by Griffin and headed back into Hogan’s path.

Four minutes into the second half Farrell O’ Connor made a superb last ditch tackle to halt a Douglas attackers run that saw him beat three players before the stalwarts timely and clinical intervention. There would be many more last ditch tackles from O’ Connor, Brady, O’ Hanlon and McCarthy before full time and some were, it’s fair to say, ‘on the edge’ but some sound refereeing meant no more than a couple of yellow cards. Wanderers hit the post following a corner on 53 minutes as the home side continued to squander chances. Griffin eventually opened the scoring on 79 minutes when he picked the ball up inside the box, shifted it to the right and drove his shot past the keeper from close range. Douglas almost levelled a minute later when a corner was returned to the taker and he curled a great effort that Leahy managed to tip over superbly. It didn’t take long for the visitors to level the score when Pa Brady gave away a free just outside the edge of the box. The free was thundered to the net from an unstoppable strike. A draw may have a fair result but with three minutes plus stoppage time on the clock Chrissy McCarthy released Griffin down the right and he lifted a cross into the path of Hogan on the line of the six yard box. Hogan hit a side foot volley to the top right of the net out of reach of the hapless keeper. A few scary moments later and the points were secure. Best for Wanderers today were Brian Leahy in goal and the full backs Farrell O’ Connor and Chris McCarthy.
